Spike thinks:

Sometimes it's like there's no one else in the universe, and the universe is a pretty big fucking place.

And he thinks:

If I knew swimming was going to be so much fun, I wouldn't have waited this long.

And he thinks:

Beth is beautiful. Inside, outside.

He sits on the edge of the bed, towel around his neck, hair still wet, and watches her move about the room. Still graceful but out of the water she's more like a cheetah than a dolphin: sleek and strong and self-sufficient and powerful, and that's a lot of what he finds so attractive about her.

He runs his hands through his hair; Beth settles next to him. She's smiling. No, glowing. Like a warm coal in a fire: radiant. And maybe some of that's for him.

He sure hopes so.

For the first time all day his thoughts brush past Julia. There was a girl one time, and she was nothing like you. Nothing like you at all, and it was a long time ago in another world, another place, another time, another reality. One that doesn't matter here. He shakes off thoughts of her: he doesn't need them. Doesn't want them. He wants what he and Beth have, what they shared earlier: it's an enchantment, a rapture, a slow seduction. He gazes into her eyes and they gaze back.
