May. 2nd, 2005 11:41 pmIt's a beautiful night outside on the asteroid: the pinpoints of light passing for stars twinkle almost as well as real ones. He can see them reflected in the lake's smooth surface, too, and his thoughts reach back automatically to a couple nights ago when they swam out here. For a brief moment he gets a flash of this place as some weird end-of-the-universe spa. Hell, the lake water was warm enough.
Or maybe that was just Beth.
That thought makes him smile and he rests his arm around her waist as they walk around the lake. It's different at night and he can tell summer's getting nearer; there's a hint of warmth on the breeze. Whoever did the atmosphere and environment here did a damn good job.
He doesn't say much; he doesn't think he needs to say much. It's good to get outside in the air, in the dark, away from the noise and the smells and the sounds of the bar. Sometimes, alone together is really nice.
"Hey, Slim," he says at long last. "You think about Cooksfield much these days?"
There. A question.
