The whole aviary is made of this glass-like substance with huge domed ceilings in every room. Maybe not the most amazing thing in the world, but it's some super-strong polymer-encrusted type of glass that doesn't break and lets the sunlight in but keeps the heat on the other side so the birds can enjoy their climate control. For those avian residents who are used to a lot less sunlight, the glass can also be dimmed to best reflect their natural habitat. There are doors and double-doors and triple-doors to pass through that keep the flying inhabitants inside when visitors come and go, once they get past the entrance and ticket booth. Spike picks up a map of the place -- a directory of sorts -- and scans it quickly, and when he finds what he's looking for he smiles. North Wing, outworld birds: Ionian Scissor Hawk, Europa Weaver Finch, Pandoran Smuggler Rail, Enceladus Fire Phoenix, Ganymede Lava Bird, Titan Acid Eater, and more. Feed our lava birds daily.

He shows it to Beth, then gives a cursory glance to the rest of the directory. East Wing: Venusian rarities. South Wing: Martian habitat. West Wing: Noah's Ark -- Earth species. At that last, he looks over at Beth. She might like to see the Mars stuff, and he knows he wants to see the Earth stuff. And the Venusian stuff. Hell, they should see it all.

It's warm and almost humid inside; he takes off his jacket and slings it over his shoulder. "Let's go feed those lava birds first." After all, they're kind of the main attraction.

After Beth, of course. He rests his arm on her shoulder as they walk past the displays talking about the history and lifespan of common Venusian birds. A picture of one of the little bright green ones is pretty damn familiar. "Hey, there's that little finch who visited us on our balcony."

Yeah, he wants to see all the birds. But mostly, he wants to see how much fun Beth has at the place.
