Europa

It's not quite business as usual on the Bebop, but it sure is a hell of a lot of fun having Beth there with him. For two days now he's trusted that fate won't screw with them as long as Jet's there and it doesn't: all the doors lead exactly where they're supposed to and whether or not it's because of Jet, Spike's still grateful to have his partner there with them. A late night leads to an even later morning -- Spike still can't believe how fucking lucky Beth is at poker and she doesn't even cheat and he swears he didn't even misdeal her a winning hand more than two times all night -- and another one of Jet's specialty breakfasts.

For the whole trip so far Spike hasn't mentioned another word about Robertson or that 3.5 million. After all, in some other time and place he put almost half a million Woolongs into the ship's safe for Jet, so payment happens. It happens. It just hasn't happened yet, but it'll show up one of these days and Jet will scratch his head and wonder where the hell it came from and hopefully figure out how to hide it from Faye. If time follows true to form, that is.

When they were in Doc's office, it was later than this: Doc knew about the nanobots and the vaccine. Time sure as hell is doing a trip on his brain, but Spike isn't going to scrutinize it too carefully. There are really only three things that matter to him so far as time goes.

First is that nothing screws with Beth and Beth Junior. No going back and forth in time for them, no harming that baby, nothing fucking with Beth. So far, they seem to be pretty damn lucky. Of course, the same rule seems to apply to him and he knows even though this is his reality, they're just visitors here. It has to be that way.

Second is that he doesn't ever run into Vicious while they're out here. He was able to control himself that one time the door opened onto that scene from his past -- one that hasn't yet happened here, he reminds himself -- but if he comes face to face with the guy out here, he might not be so reasonable. And that might screw up the future, and he doesn't want that.

The third thing is that when they get to Europa, he hopes like hell that the Black Lion syndicate doesn't find him, and that one has everything to do with time and timing. But thinking about all this shit gives him a headache, so he lets it go and turns to Beth and damn, is she just fucking radiant. She looks like she's been having a hell of a good time, and they haven't even gotten to Europa yet. He almost moves to straighten his tie but at the last minute tugs it just a tiny bit looser instead.

Beth likes it that way.

"Got everything you want and need, Slim?" He has no idea if or when they'll be back here, but he does know adventure lies ahead. "Jet says just another hour or so till we're close enough to fly into Europa." With a smug little grin and half a shrug he moves their stuff from bed to bureau, remakes the bed. "So it's ready for us next time."

Whenever or wherever that might be. Only time will tell.
