With a shrug, he resettles baby Beth so he can actually turn to face Beth. "I'll be honest with you: I never thought I'd be agreeing with a statement like that. You know... bounty hunter, can't stand kids, don't want them, leave me alone, let me sleep, all that shit. But I told myself a long time ago that whatever happened to you, I'd be along for the ride." Before continuing, he takes just a moment to gather his thoughts, make sure the right words spill out.
"So, that sounds all flippant but you know what, Slim? I do love you. I love you a hell of a lot, and so what if I never wanted kids? That was then. Little Beth here, she's... she's amazing. I was thinking the other day when she was sleeping on my chest how kind of pure and innocent and amazing she is. I've always known if I didn't have you, I'd be one sorry son of a bitch but she... she magnifies that. You know how they say you don't know what you've got until it goes missing? I think that's wrong. I think I know what I've got, and I appreciate the hell out of it. Sometimes I want to wake you up in the middle of the night just to say thank you, but... hell, Junior already wakes you up enough."
Shit yeah, she changed his world. Beth changed it that first day she talked to him, and then kept changing it every day. Changing it, making it grow. But he figures he'll quit while he's ahead, before they come and kick him out of the tough guy club.
