Leaving

This might not have been their most exciting vacation (he thinks Venus gets that because of the bounty hunt and the parasailing) or the most luxurious (Mars gets that because of the resort by the ocean), but in a lot of ways, this has been his favorite of them all for a really simple reason: Beth said it's long been a wish of hers to vacation in the Bahamas.

And that's what they did.

And she got to fly a plane on Earth and land a plane on Earth and there was never a moment's doubt in Spike's mind that she could do it. She just needed to know she could.

But he woke up in his room on the Bebop in the middle of whatever passed for night, frantic and sweating, and this voice in his head told him it was time to go back. He looked at Beth bathed in the cobalt blue of the ever-present emergency lights and damn if she didn't look so peaceful: no voice was telling her to wake the fuck up and pack and get back to the bar.

Fuck you, he told it, but the voice of his conscience or whatever the hell it was turned out to be stronger than that and wouldn't let him sleep again until he'd made a bargain with it: okay, okay, but not right this minute. Look at how relaxed Beth is: I'm not ending this trip by waking her up in some panic just because it's time to leave. Morning will be soon enough, goddammit, you let us have this last night here together uninterrupted.

Spike doesn't want to go back. And he sure as hell despises anyone or anything telling him what to do and for a moment he thinks they can just get into the Swordfish and take off again: back to Venus because that's where Beth said she would go. But they tried to tempt fate last time and the Swordfish turned out to be what took them to the end of the universe again.

(He prefers that the Swordfish remains just a ship, just his ship, and not some go-between from this reality to another.)

This time, he doesn't leave much to fate: up early, he packs their things. Beth doesn't need a translator to figure out what's going on.

Spike picks up the backpack. "I don't want to do this, Beth."
