(no subject)

Beth Junior's propped up in his lap and he's got the book out so she can see it. It's a stupid book, but it's also kind of funny and he figures it can't hurt to read to her, no matter how much or how little she actually understands. At least the colors are bright and the words have an easy cadence to them, so he keeps on while Beth's brushing her teeth.

"A green dog over a tree." That's ridiculous; he points to a green dog flying a yellow helicopter. Dogs don't know how to be pilots... not that he's going to burst Junior's bubble on that one or anything. Somewhere deep inside he still holds onto this stubborn idea of a house on Venus with the three of them, maybe a big dog like he had when he was a kid, working in the yard with his NO DAMN SYNDICATE OWNS ME t-shirt declaring his status proudly.

Yeah, right: as if.

"A yellow dog under a tree. Look, Junior, this one's reading, just like we are."

He covets the dog's hammock.

"Two dogs in a house on a boat in the water." The dogs' house has a diving board: that's practical. "A dog over the water. A dog under the water. A... knock at the door. Hold that thought." Setting aside Go, Dog. Go! for the time being, he scoops up Little Beth and, after a glance at the bathroom to make sure Beth's got all the privacy she needs -- that bathroom door never gets closed quite all the way in here any more -- he moves to the room door. They're not expecting anyone, but people have been known to drop by. It's probably Elaine.

"Yo." He pulls the door open about halfway; Beth Junior turns her wobbly little head with a curious but huge grin that serves as its own damn welcoming committee. She's so precious, so sweet, so innocent. He hopes that never changes. And then it's his turn to smile. "Hey. Great, you found the place." Taking just a moment, he sets the number 8 back up on its bottom, but it's going to fall over onto its side again any second now; he's so used to that. "Come on in."

"Hullo there. I hope we're not interrupting. Door and I wanted to stop in, since you'd invited us to drop by. I thought we might chat about your living situation."

They've both become slightly more careful about inviting people into the House. However, this is a family with an infant, and the House of Arch was opened to guests in the first place for families and individuals who needed a quieter, safer place to dwell than the bar proper.

Tom's initial impressions of people tend to be correct, and he quite liked Spike. Besides that, he's a bounty hunter, which means he is like as not a fighting man. Having another fighter in the House with a vested interest in keeping it safe is a definite plus.

"Yes, yes."

Door looks around room, pen tapping at her Blackberry in a rapid rhythm.

"Screenings and interviews are so time consuming."

Her focus abruptly shifts from the room to Spike.

"But necessary. We have children of our own, you see. You'll agree, I think, that their safety and care is paramount?"

She's ready to take notes on his answer.

Beth can hear voices the instant she stops running water, and she pauses in surprise when she recognizes that it's not just a female voice -- Elaine, she would've expected -- but a female's and a male's in addition to Spike's.

She kind of blinks at herself in the mirror for a moment, figuring it must be Tom and his wife or Ingress and a little bit more amazed than she could possibly explain that the offer was made in such seriousness that they're actually here already.

Turning on the water again, she splashes her face quickly and then pats it dry with a towel and runs a hand through her hair. She looks... well, like she's getting more sleep than she was a few weeks ago. That's good.

When she opens the door and steps out, she's prepared to smile in a way that's a little more subdued and businesslike until she catches sight of the grin Junior's treating everybody to.

"Hi." Exchanging a quick glance with Spike, she steps forward. "I'm Beth. You must be... the Riddles."

Tom grins at the tone of Spike's voice in greeting Beth. He recognizes it well.

Although at the moment, he finds he's needing to give Door a nudge with an elbow to distract her attention from the damnable Blackberry. It's worse than the laptop in that it is much more portable. He's really got to get to the bottom of whatever's cursed her into acting this way.

But first, he needs to make sure these fine people have rooms in the House of Arch, if they'd like them. Spike's obvious love for his family - and lack of any noticeable dark aura - has sold him.

"Lord and Lady of the House of Arch, actually, but please, just call us Tom and Door," Tom corrects in an affable tone. He and Door had never even discussed her taking his surname. It had simply never come up.

"It's a pleasure to meet you." He gives Beth a small bow. "We wanted to answer any questions you might have about the House of Arch. Door opened the House long ago to residents and families at Milliways who needed a quieter, safer place to reside, and we'd be happy to provide you the same."

Tom and Door: she can handle that.

"We were friends of Snow White and she never had a bad word to say about the House of Arch, but I have to admit I don't know the first thing about it other than the fact that Snow always came from and left through that same portrait in the bar."

She smooths down Junior's shirt, only to have one of her fingers captured in a tiny hand.

"The two of us have been here over two years, but with little Beth at three months, I think it's safe to say we're starting to realize how nice it'd be to have a little something more than we do."

Not necessary because she's kind of used to making the most of what she's got, but definitely nice. Definitely preferable, if possible.

What strikes her the most about the whole situation, though, is that this is the first real decision she and Spike are making together as if they're a family.

Inwardly, it's a little bit startling.

Door looks up at that last bit, and while she doesn't quite tuck the Blackberry away, her smile is slightly less businesslike than one might expect, if only for a moment.

"Well, we'd hardly demand absolute silence and circumspection--the House is set up so that such issues are rarely a concern. You'll have your rooms, and access to a few of the communal areas. You will, however, give your word not to venture into London Below without accompaniment, and not to allow any guests entrance to either the common rooms or to your own quarters without first speaking with myself or Tom."

She taps her pen against the Blackberry again, no nonsense gaze split evenly between Beth and Spike.

"There may be one or two other minor points, but those are easily enough covered by Tom, I believe."

"We don't charge rent. The rooms float about the Underside, lost and forgotten, and they're quite easy for us to attach to the House. All that we ask in return is that you keep your rooms in order and help us protect the House. Milliways is not the safest of places, and occasionally that can trickle down to us. We'll do whatever we must to keep the House and its residents safe, and as long as you're willing to follow the rules regarding guests, you're more than welcome to join us."

Shifting Junior in her arms, Beth looks from Tom to Door and back again in obvious surprise. "You don't charge rent?"

Somehow it's almost the most foreign of all the things they've said.

"Well," she starts, turning her head for a moment to give Spike a look before she smiles outright, "I think that's a hell of a deal. Those conditions are pretty much the least we can do for the opportunity to live there rent-free."

She's not exactly sure she understands how the house works, but she's made far more impulsive decisions before with seemingly less good reason to.

"It sounds great."

A knocking on the door is followed by a blur of blue as Ingress hurries in. "Hi! Oh, good, I remembered the number right. Door, a rat came for you and said he had an urgent message."

Ingress hands Door the rat and waves at Beth, Beth Junior, and Spike.

She tightens her lips at that last, but nods, holding the rat up in one hand and murmuring to it for a moment.

"Excuse me Beth, Spike," she says, each name accompanied by a quick nod, "But it seems I've some rather urgent affairs to attend to Below. Nothing terribly serious, Tom, but a few unhappy stockholders, if they have enough shares, cause problems for everyone."

She manages another smile at the House's new inhabitants.

"I am pleased to have you join us, though. New residents keep things lively."

And bring in business.

Then, having said her piece, Door turns and strides briskly out.

"I like your hair," Beth tells Ingress in a confidential tone, crouching down so the younger two can see each other better. "Blue's my favorite color."

Glancing up at Spike and Tom, she has to grin.

Despite never having seen this many people in her home at once before, Beth Junior's taking it pretty well. Giving Ingress the same kind of winning smile she gave Tom and Door earlier, she lets out an impressive gurgle.

"Hi, baby Beth," says Ingress, taking Beth's smile as an invitation to come closer. "Is your daddy putting your diaper on the right way? I taught him how."

She waves at the baby and reaches out a finger for Beth Jr. to wrap her little hand around. "I like babies. I'm an official big sister for Amy's baby Susan. And I've held Anthony lots."

Tom edges towards Spike as well. A 1950's chap knows when he's outnumbered. He whispers with a grin, "I recommend having a son next. It balances things out quite well."

"Let me see, how does one begin to explain the House of Arch? First of all, I'm not of the Underside originally, which is the world London Below exists within. The Underside is where people and things - trapped time, forgotten places - fall through the cracks from the world Above. Door's family is a family of Openers."

His voice drops slightly and he turns his back slightly to Ingress. "The Underside is a dangerous place. Several months before I met Door in Milliways, her parents and brother were ambushed and killed by hired assailants within the House itself. Ingress witnessed her mother's murder, and she was kidnapped and held prisoner for seven months. So when I say I wish to protect the House and all those within it, I have reason. I've more protective wards set upon it now than her family could ever have done, so it's a much safer place."

Then his voice returns to normal levels. "As for me, I'm from the Wizarding world of England, but from a time before Door's. I ended up in Milliways, met her, and my life changed. We've been together ever since. I aided her in opening the House to the patrons of the bar; it's my charm that allows people to pass to and fro. The paintings are magical, you see. They're like doors, but, well, not. So in your rooms, you'll have pictures of the different rooms you can access. To go through them, you simply place a hand on the painting and the charm pulls you through. I'll show you, don't worry."

By this time, Beth's made a point of assuring Ingress that Spike was taught well at the diaper-changing business and that she must be a great official big sister if she could give such good pointers.

And she only had to gently keep Junior from leading Ingress's finger straight into her waiting mouth one time. Only foiled for a moment, the baby sticks her own finger in her mouth instead.

With her attention divided, she's only caught bits and pieces of the conversation about the house itself, but Spike'll probably be able to tell her nearly word-for-word how things work.

"No, but I think there's a diaper change in my near future," she almost smirks, "unless you feel like demonstrating your skill."

And she doubts that, but before anything else, she shifts the baby in her arms and turns to Tom. "What does keying us to the paintings involve? Do we have to do anything?"

To say it's all new to her is a pretty serious understatement.

"No, we don't need anything. I know it's rather odd to find yourself in a situation like this. In my experience, there is always an ulterior motive to any action. I assure you both - we have rooms we don't need, and we like being able to help people stuck here enjoy their lives in a comfortable home. Ingress, why don't you say goodbye for now. You can come back later, perhaps, or wait to visit when Beth and Spike have moved in."

"Okay," she says, reluctantly leaving the baby. "Spike, maybe you can be one of my teachers once you move in. I like learning fighting stuff. Bye bye!"

She waves, taking Tom's hand as he reaches for the doorknob.

Holding little Beth up so they're cheek-to-cheek, Beth grins and waves bye to Ingress.

Junior smells vaguely like baby powder, and she lets out one of the biggest yawns Beth thinks she's ever seen from her before.

Cradling the baby close, she straightens and takes a step closer to Spike.

"Well--" She has to be honest. "--I almost don't know what to tell you, Tom." But it's one time she feels absolutely certain she can speak for Spike, too. "But we appreciate this a lot."
